How to Read an Electric Scooter Spec Sheet (So Nobody Can Fool You)
You don't need to become an engineer to buy an electric scooter. But you do need to know one thing: most spec sheets are written to impress you, not inform you. The numbers are usually real — they're just measured in a lab, on flat ground, with a featherweight rider, in conditions you'll never actually ride in.
This guide explains what each number really means, so you can walk into any shop or open any website and not get played. Even if you don't buy from us. Especially then.
The four numbers that actually matter
💪1. Watts (motor power) — this is muscle, not speed.
Watts tell you how much work the motor can do: accelerate, climb hills, and hold speed when the road tilts up or a heavier rider is on board. More watts does not automatically mean a higher top speed — it means more grunt.
Peak vs. continuous watts. A scooter sold as "1000W" might only sustain far less continuously — strong for three seconds, sluggish up a long hill. Always look for the continuous (a.k.a. nominal/rated) number, not just the peak.
🏁2. Voltage (V) — the real speed lever.
Top-speed potential rides mostly on voltage (together with the motor and controller). A 60V system generally pushes harder and holds speed better than a 48V one. If two scooters have similar watts but different voltage, the higher-voltage one usually has more top end.
🔋3. Amp-hours (Ah) — only half the story.
Ah is battery capacity in one dimension, and by itself it tells you almost nothing. A 15Ah battery at 60V holds far more energy than a 15Ah battery at 36V. Never compare Ah between scooters with different voltages.
⛽4. Watt-hours (Wh = Volts × Amp-hours) — THE real range number.
This is the one to compare: the actual size of the fuel tank. (Example: 60V × 15Ah = 900Wh.) When two scooters list different volts and Ah, convert both to Wh and you're finally comparing apples to apples.
The two biggest lies on almost every spec sheet
"Top speed: X mph." Usually the absolute maximum — highest mode (sometimes app-unlocked), light rider, maybe a slight downhill. Your everyday cruising speed will be lower. That's fine — just know the headline number isn't your normal.
"Range: up to X miles." This is the big one. That figure comes from a lab: roughly a 165 lb rider, flat ground, warm weather, eco mode, a steady ~15 mph, and no stops. Real-world range is typically 60–75% of it — and hills, your weight, cold, and riding fast cut it further. On top of that, the battery keeps a 10–20% reserve it never uses, so the cells last.
The specs nobody advertises (but you'll feel every day)
- ·Weight capacity — pick a scooter rated well above your weight (20–30 lb of headroom). Ride near the limit and you lose range, speed, and battery life.
- ·Brakes — how it stops matters more than how fast it goes. Disc/hydraulic brakes stop shorter than electronic-only.
- ·Tires — pneumatic (air) tires ride softer and grip better; solid tires never go flat but beat you up on rough pavement.
- ·Water resistance (IP rating) — most scooters handle light rain (around IP54); none love puddles. Check it before you get caught in it.
- ·Folded size & weight — the spec that decides whether you'll actually carry it up the stairs or lift it into a trunk.
The most important thing that isn't a number — the company behind it
A spec sheet can't tell you whether the brand will answer the phone in a year, honor the warranty, or have a replacement part when you need one. This is where most cheap scooters quietly fail: great numbers, no support. So ask:
- ?Is there a real warranty — and who actually performs the repair?
- ?Can I get parts down the road?
- ?Will this brand still exist next year?
A slightly "lesser" scooter from a company that stands behind it will outlast a spec monster from a brand that vanishes after checkout.
Match the scooter to YOU (the 60-second version)
- 1Start with the use, not the spec: commute distance, hills, your weight, whether you'll carry it.
- 2Convert range to real-world (× ~0.65) and make sure it covers your round trip with margin.
- 3Check the weight capacity has headroom over your weight.
- 4If you have hills, confirm the continuous watts (not just peak).
- 5Check it's legal where you'll ride (rules vary by city — even within the same county).
- 6Check the warranty and support before you fall for the price.
