The battery has a happy place

The most expensive part · the easiest to protect

Your battery is often a third of what the whole scooter costs — and the habits that protect it are genuinely easy. Day to day, keep the charge between 20% and 80%. Full for big rides is fine; parked at the extremes for days is the slow damage. Storing it a while? Park it around half charge, indoors.

The one rule: live between 20 and 80 · store at ~half · cold rides are fine, cold charging is damage.

You need about $50 of tools, not a garage

Scooters are metric

Almost everything on a scooter comes apart with metric hex keys. A folding hex set, a pump with a gauge, small pliers, a small adjustable wrench, and zip ties — that's ~90% of all scooter jobs, and it fits in a pouch.

The one rule: snug is the goal — stripped is forever. Small bolts, firm hands, no gorilla torque.

Maintenance is a rhythm, not a project

Ten minutes, twice a month

A 30-second pre-ride glance (brakes, tires, one firm wiggle, battery vs trip) and a 10-minute two-week checkup (pressure, bolts, brakes, fold hinge, wipe-down) — that's most of scooter maintenance. Buying used? There's an inspection that separates "great deal" from "someone else's problem."

The one rule: the checklists ARE the maintenance. Run them on the page, or print the card and pen-tick it.

Tires: fit beats "best"

The loudest debate in scooter ownership

Solid tires never go flat — and transmit every bump. Air tires grip and cushion — and want a pressure check every two weeks. The right answer is your riding, not the tire: casual + decent pavement = solid is defensible; speed, rain, rough roads = air wins. And most flats trace to riding underinflated, so the pressure habit quietly wins the whole argument.

The one rule: inflate to the sidewall number every two weeks — never above it, never by thumb-feel.

Half of care is restraint

The NEVER list

Never spray anything near brake rotors or pads. Never classic WD-40 on bearings. Never charge frozen or soaked. Never a charger that merely fits. Never open the battery pack. Never pressure-wash it. Each feels harmless in the moment — each has a bill attached.

The one rule: swelling, smells, a wobble that tightening doesn't fix, brakes that stay spongy — stop riding, get an answer first.

Keep a record — future-you gets paid for it

The habit that raises resale value

Every completed checkup on our checklist page stamps the date and hands you a downloadable checkup card. Keep them. A scooter with a dated maintenance record is worth more the day you sell it — and the buyer who sees the stack knows exactly what kind of owner you were.

The one rule: tick it, date it, keep it. Ten minutes twice a month becomes proof.
