Five questions about your own riding

The receipt: ask for watt-hours, volts multiplied by amp-hours. That is the size of the tank, and unlike a range figure it cannot be quietly optimistic. Then ask what the range figure assumed about rider weight, temperature and hills. Without those, it has not told you which ride it describes.
02 · Speed How fast it will go Entry level Around 15 to 20 mph. A ceiling low enough for a bike lane, which for a lot of riding is the right ceiling. What more buys Ours tops out at 31 mph. It ships capped lower and raising it is a deliberate move you make, not a default you inherit. The receipt, and what to ask for
The receipt: volts do not equal speed. Volts allow the cap for the speed, and the controller caps within it, so ask for both. Why volts matter at all is heat: power is volts multiplied by current, so the same power at 60% of the voltage needs about 1.7 times the current, which is about 2.8 times the heat in the same copper. Low voltage is not forbidden. It is defeated by heat.
03 · Climb Hills, and rough ground Entry level One motor, commonly a few hundred watts. Flat ground and gentle rises, and a steep hill is not what it is for. What more buys Two 1,000 W motors, rated to a 30 degree climb. Street hills rarely pass 10 degrees, so the useful part is that it does not fade on the second one. The receipt, and what to ask for
The receipt: ask whether a wattage is continuous or peak. A bare wattage has not answered you. Peak is a few seconds. Continuous is the whole hill. Then ask how many motors, and whether the second one is sharing the work or covering for the first, because one doing the job of two gets hot doing it, and heat is what slows a machine down before the battery is empty.
04 · Comfort How comfortable it is Entry level Small wheels, often around eight inches, and little or no suspension. You feel the road, and on a smooth street that is no hardship. What more buys 10 inch tubeless tyres and suspension. A bad surface stops deciding how long you ride, so the battery ends the trip and not your wrists. The receipt, and what to ask for
The receipt: this adds no miles to the pack. Not one. What it changes is which thing ends the ride, your wrists or the battery. Ask what is sprung at each end, and ask the tyre size and who made them. They are the only part of the machine touching the road.
05 · Telemetry What it tells you Entry level A battery bar and a speed on the deck, and often no phone app at all. What more buys A phone app carrying the real telemetry: charge, speed, trip and ride data, firmware, and a lockout that makes the machine worth less to a thief than the effort of taking it. Everything works in a car park. The five above start separating on the tenth mile, wet, loaded and late, and only two of them are numbers you can sort a search page by. Which is why the search page keeps sorting by those two.
The answer
$400 vs $1,500: where does the extra money go?
Capability.
Not a bigger number. A machine that does more.

It buys capability. More range, and more of it left at the end. Hills that do not fade on the second climb. A ride still comfortable at mile ten. Continuous power instead of a burst. A battery certified to a standard you can look up yourself. Parts you can still order next year, and a warranty with somebody answering. And one buying rule: buy for your worst regular ride, not your average one.
UL 2272
Every figure above is about how the machine rides. This one is about whether the battery is safe to charge in the room you sleep above. UL 2272 is the safety standard for the whole electrical system tested together, not just the cell: battery, charger, wiring, controller. The testing is deliberately abusive. It does not ask whether the pack works. It asks what the pack does when something goes wrong.
Ask for the number, not the word
"UL certified" is a sentence anybody can type. A certificate has an issuing body and a number, and the certifier publishes it. Ours is CU 72605906, TUV Rheinland, model KS-N12T3, on TUV Certipedia. Search it there and you are reading it from them, not from us.
Why the spec sheet will not settle it
Put two listings at these prices side by side and the same headline rows come up on both. Watts, miles, miles per hour, a battery figure. The rows match, so the comparison feels like it should settle something.
Whatever those four rows say, the seller wrote them, and the price does not change who holds the pen. That is a description of the document, not an accusation about anybody: a spec sheet is written by the party with something to sell, at every price. You cannot close a price gap with a paper only one side of it wrote.
A figure a seller will not print is not automatically a bad figure. It is a figure you are being asked to assume.
What the machine tells you about itself
That was the fifth question, and it is the one nobody asks in a shop. A spec sheet is the seller's document. Telemetry is the machine's own. Here is ours, read off the maker's app paired to our own machine, before a single value was changed.
What it reports
Live, while you ride: remaining mileage, battery, voltage, current and main-board temperature. Plus a lifetime odometer, which read 0.36 km the day we recorded ours, so a used one cannot round its history down. Five drive modes, a lock and unlock, and a vehicle password.
What it arrives set to
Three gear speeds, each a slider you set between 3 and 60 km/h on firmware above 1.26: P1 at 20, P2 at 30, P3 at 60. It arrives on P2, which is 30 km/h, about 18.6 mph. The 31 mph we publish is P3, and you get there by moving that slider. A ceiling is not a capability, so setting one higher than the machine is rated for adds no speed. Two short onboarding videos sit in front of the speed modes and can be skipped straight through. We would rather you read that here than find it in your driveway.
And two things it buys after the sale
The five above are properties of the machine. These two are properties of whoever sold it to you, they stay invisible until something has already gone wrong, and both survive being asked about in one message before you buy.
Parts that still exist next year
A machine built hard to a price can be one season's run with nothing standing behind it. The test is not whether a lever snaps. It is whether there is anything to order when one does.
A warranty with somebody answering
A term is only worth the company still picking up in month eleven. Ours is 1 year from activation, and it covers five parts by name: battery, motor, controller, shock absorber, charger.
Name the part you want a price for. Ask what the term covers and what starts it. A company that will not answer either question in writing has answered both.
So which one should you buy?
The useful question is not whether $400 is enough. It is how much margin your ride asks for. Four conditions decide it, and you already know your own answer to each.

Buy for your worst regular ride, not your average one. The average ride is fine on almost anything. It is the hill on the way home, in the wet, with a bag, that decides whether the machine was the right buy.
Questions people ask next
Is a $400 electric scooter a scam?
No. A machine built to a price is still a machine, and on a short flat commute it can do that job for years. The risk is not fraud. It is buying one for a ride it was never designed to do, then reading the result as a fault.
Why do cheap and expensive scooters list similar top speeds?
Because a top speed is easy to touch briefly and hard to hold. The same figure can describe a burst downhill with a light rider, or a speed held up a gradient with a heavy one. Same number, different sentence, and the listing does not say which.
What single spec should I compare first?
Watt-hours, volts multiplied by amp-hours. If a listing gives you neither the volts nor the amp-hours, that is information too.
What certification should I ask for by name?
UL 2272, and then know exactly what it covers, because the precision is the point. It certifies the electrical system: battery, management board, charging and wiring. It says nothing about whether the frame holds you. Ask for that separately, and ask who did the testing.
Does spending more guarantee a better machine?
No. Price is a signal, not a specification. The five questions at the top of this page are what the money is supposed to answer, and the only way to find out whether it did is to ask each one by name and see what comes back.
