The answer
Can I take my electric scooter on a plane?
No!?
- You can't take it in the cabin.
- You can't check it into the hold.
- You can't take the battery out and pack it separately.
And here is why. There is a cutoff.
Under 100 Wh you carry it on and nobody asks. Between 100 and 160 Wh you can still carry it on, with the airline's approval arranged first and two spares at most. Over 160 Wh it is prohibited in the cabin and prohibited in the hold, and both packs in the chart above are over that line.

What the rule actually says
The FAA publishes a page called PackSafe that sets out what you may carry. For lithium batteries it draws two lines, which makes three bands.
UP TO 100 Wh
Carry it on. No approval needed.
Laptops, phones and cameras sit here. Nothing in this band needs asking about before you fly.
100 TO 160 Wh
Carry-on only, with the airline's approval.
Two spare batteries at most, and the approval comes from the airline, not from the rule.
OVER 160 Wh
Prohibited. Carry-on and checked.
Read that twice, because it is the line people get wrong. The hold is not a workaround. There is no version of "I will just check it".

Why a scooter lands in the top band
The rule attaches to energy, not to weight. A light scooter is not exempt and a folding one is not exempt. The only question is what the battery holds, and that is one multiplication. The FAA's own page prints the formula.
Run it on a modest commuter pack, then on the pack we sell. Both bars below are drawn to the same scale, and the amber tick is where 160 falls on each one.
Both figures come off the packs' own labels. Neither is rounded, and neither is a nominal number dressed up as a usable one.
Where the line actually sits
Turn the rule around and ask what size of pack would clear it. At 36 volts, the arithmetic gives one number.
The largest 36 volt pack that stays inside the carry-on band. Below that figure you are inside the rule. Above it you are not, and the size of the machine has nothing to do with it.
That is the whole test, and it is why the answer does not change from one scooter to the next once you have done the multiplication. Take the number off the listing before you take the scooter to an airport.
Two things that do not help
Taking the battery out
The threshold is written per battery, not per bag or per device. A 923.52 Wh pack in your hand is the same 923.52 Wh pack it was in the deck.
Checking it instead
Above 160 Wh the prohibition covers both places at once. Checking it is not the lesser option, it is the same refusal at a different desk.
And the airline sits above all of it
An airline may be stricter than the FAA, and an airline may refuse scooters and hoverboards outright whatever the number says. The federal rule sets the ceiling. It does not oblige anyone to carry you up to it.
What to do instead
Send it by road
A pack this size moves as a shipment rather than as luggage, under its own set of rules. That means arranging it as a shipment, with a carrier who will say yes in writing before the machine leaves the house.
Ride something at the other end
For a short trip, weigh a rental against the cost and the paperwork of moving your own machine across the country and back. Your scooter waits at home, charged, for the commute it was bought for.

Find the watt-hours
A good listing prints "Wh" outright. If yours does not, find the volts and the amp-hours and multiply them.

Compare it to 160
That is the entire test. Over 160 Wh means it does not fly, in either the cabin or the hold.

Ask the airline anyway
They can be stricter than the rule, and their answer is the one that decides whether you board. Ask before you buy the ticket, not at the counter.
If the listing shows neither figure
That is worth noticing on its own. Watt-hours are the one figure this question turns on, and a listing that will not print the volts and the amp-hours has told you something without meaning to.
Questions people ask next
Can I put it in checked baggage instead?
No. Over 160 Wh is prohibited as carry-on and as checked baggage. The hold is not a lesser option, it is the same prohibition in a different part of the aircraft.
What if I take the battery out and carry it separately?
It does not help. The threshold applies to the battery itself, so a pack over 160 Wh is barred whether it is in the scooter or in your bag.
Is there any electric scooter I can fly with?
Only one whose battery lands under the threshold. Between 100 and 160 Wh you need the airline's approval arranged in advance, and no more than two spares. Above 160 Wh, the answer is no regardless of who you ask.
Does this apply outside the United States?
The 100 Wh and 160 Wh thresholds come from international dangerous-goods rules rather than from any one airline. The airline is still the authority on its own aircraft, so check with them, and do it before you buy a ticket you cannot use.
My listing shows amp-hours but no watt-hours. What now?
Multiply the volts by the amp-hours. If the listing gives you only one of the two, you cannot work out the tank at all, which is the same problem in a different disguise.
