What Charging an Electric Scooter Actually Costs — Measured at the Wall
Spec sheets talk in watt-hours. Your electric bill talks in dollars. Almost nobody connects the two with an actual measurement — so we did. We put a $30 power meter between the wall and our own scooter's charger, photographed the meter at zero, and let one real charging session write the receipt. No math from brochures. The wall counted every watt.

The meter is a plug-through wattmeter (ours is the P3 Kill A Watt, accurate to a claimed 0.2%, about $30 at a hardware store). It sits between the outlet and the charger and counts kilowatt-hours the same way the power company does — two photos and the number between them make the whole test. No wiring, no opinions, no way to flatter the result.
The receipt
For scale: the charger's factory rating is 67.2V at 2 amps — about 134 watts flat out. Our wall readings sat within a few watts of that ceiling for the whole bulk phase, which means two independent witnesses (the manufacturer's spec sheet and a $30 meter) agree with each other. That's what a number looks like when it's telling the truth.
What that costs at your rate
Three things the meter taught us that spec sheets don't
- 01The battery gauge runs optimistic while the cord is in. Twenty minutes into our session the display claimed 11 points of new charge — physically impossible at 130 watts. The gauge estimates from voltage, and voltage reads high while the charger pushes. Trust the percentage an hour after unplugging, not during.
- 02The app can't see the charger. Our scooter's app showed negative current — the electronics' own tiny draw — even while the pack drank 130+ watts. The wall meter turned out to be the only honest witness to charging speed. If you want the truth about charging, measure at the wall.
- 03The whole 29-to-80 run happens at full speed. Our charger held essentially its full 2 amps the entire way — the draw actually climbed from 130W to 146W as the pack's voltage rose (watts = amps × volts, and the wall watches the voltage climb in real time). The gentle "taper," where watts slide off as the charger eases up, lives in the final stretch above 80% — which is exactly why the last 20% takes disproportionately long, and why 80% is the efficient daily habit.

This test IS our S60 — the receipt above is our own unit's first measured charging session, run the day of her first power-on, with the meter photos in her permanent record. Extrapolating from it: a full 0-to-100 fill of the 923.5 Wh pack should draw roughly 1 kWh from the wall — call it 10 to 20 cents depending on your rate — estimated until we measure a full cycle, which we will. And cost per mile? That number waits for our own range test, because we won't divide by a mileage figure we haven't verified. When we publish it, it'll have a receipt too.

Our measured session — a 29%-to-80% fill on a 923.5 Wh pack — drew 0.57 kWh from the wall, which is 9¢ at a typical 15¢/kWh rate. Does leaving the charger plugged in cost money?
Barely — and we measured that too: with the scooter disconnected, our charger read 0.0 watts on the meter, an idle draw too small for a household power meter to even register. Should I charge to 80% or 100%?
For daily riding, stopping around 80-90% is the battery-friendly habit — lithium packs age fastest sitting at full, and the last stretch of charging is the slowest part anyway.
