A machine only has one voice. It can't tap you on the shoulder — it can only sound different than it did yesterday. A squeak, a click, a grind, a rattle: that's a part telling you it's quietly carrying two loads, and hoping you're listening before the load gets heavier. The good news: scooter noises are honest. Each one points at its own part of the machine. Here's the decoder.

First, locate the noise

Before you guess what a noise means, figure out where it lives. Four questions do it — each one narrows the machine to a single area:

Does it speed up and slow down with the wheels?

Does it only happen when you brake?
→ brake world: pads, rotor, lever
Does it only happen over bumps?
→ fastener world: something is loose
Does it only happen under power?
→ drive world: motor, hub, controller

Six sounds, six messages

Roll somewhere quiet, listen once with intent, and match what you hear. Every sound wears a severity tag — most of these are yours to handle:

Squeal when you brake

The most common noise a scooter makes, and usually the most innocent — a film on the rotor makes the pad vibrate like a violin string. Rain rides and dusty streets both do it.
THE FIX → Wipe the rotor clean with isopropyl alcohol on a clean rag. Never oil or lube anything near a brake — a quiet brake that can't stop you isn't a fix.
GROWS WITH SPEED
Grinding or gravel that grows with speed

READS: a bearing running dry
Bearings are the quietest workers on the machine — until their grease is gone. Then every rotation sounds like sand. Left alone, the bearing pits, wobbles, and starts handing its load to the axle.
THE FIX → Lift the wheel, spin it by hand: roughness or gravel-feel confirms it. Bearing service or replacement — a small, cheap part doing a huge job.
ONCE PER WHEEL TURN
A click, once every wheel revolution

READS: the wheel picked something up
A rhythm that matches the wheel is the wheel talking. Usually a stone or screw in the tread, sometimes a valve stem or a bent fender tab kissing the tire once per lap.
THE FIX → Spin the wheel slowly and watch the tread go by. A stone: flick it out. A screw or nail in an air tire: don't yank it in the driveway — it may be the only thing holding the air in. Plan the repair first.
OVER BUMPS
Rattles over bumps

The least scary noise and the most useful one — a rattle is a fastener resigning slowly. Fenders, kickstands, accessory mounts, and folded levers are the usual suspects.
THE FIX → The grab-and-shake hunt: with the scooter parked, grab the fender, the kickstand, each accessory — whatever moves, snug it. Two minutes, and it's on the checkup checklist for a reason.
AT THE STEM
A clunk from the stem when you brake or launch

Braking and launching rock the stem against its joint — a clunk means there's space where there shouldn't be. Small play grows; the stem is not a part that gets to be loose.
THE FIX → Check the fold lock is fully seated, then snug the headset/joint hardware per your manual. Play that won't tighten away — or any visible crack — is a stop-riding signal. See the red card below.
UNDER POWER
A new whine or scrape under power

READS: the hub wants a look
Hub motors hum — that's their normal voice, and it rises with load. What matters is change: a whine that wasn't there last week, or a scraping from inside the hub (debris finds its way in).
THE FIX → Compare wheels: lift and spin each one powered off. If one hub sounds different from the other, that's your answer — and a motor that scrapes is a service case, not a ride-through.
Trust change over volume. A machine that's always hummed isn't confessing anything — a machine that sounds different this week is.

The "fix" that makes it worse

The WD-40 myth

Something squeaks, and the whole internet says the same thing: spray it. Here's the problem — WD-40 is mostly a solvent, built to displace water and cut through gunk. Sprayed into a bearing, it thins and washes out the grease that was keeping the bearing alive. The squeak stops for a week — because you've dissolved the last of the lubricant — and then the bearing runs dry for real.

Quiet for a week, dead in a month. If a bearing is noisy, it needs grease or replacement, not a spray that smells like progress. And near brakes, the rule has no exceptions at all: nothing slippery touches a rotor or pad, ever →

The sounds that mean park it — today

Structural sounds are not maintenance items

  • A crack or pop from the frame, stem, or fold joint — especially after a curb hit or a fall. A curb is a load event; metal that spoke once will speak again.
  • Metal-on-metal grinding when you brake — the pad material is gone and the backing plate is eating your rotor. Braking power goes with it.
  • A wobble you can feel in the bars plus any of the noises above — two symptoms pointing at the same joint outrank every errand you had planned.

And here's the part that matters on real streets: you might not hear it. Headphones in, wind at speed, traffic all around — a structural crack doesn't wait for a quiet moment. But you'll feel it: after a hard curb hit or a fall, the machine rides different — a looseness, a lean, a vibration that wasn't there this morning. Treat "feels off" with exactly the same respect as "sounds off." Feel is the noise your body picks up when your ears are busy.

Tires, brakes, bolts, and bearings are yours to care for — that's the whole spirit of this series. The frame, stem, fork, and fold joint are different: if one of those makes a sound, the ride is over until it's been looked at. A structural part that gets "reinforced" at home fails again at speed, at face height. Stop riding beats hoping.

The two-minute listen

You don't need a trained ear — you need a baseline. Three habits build it:

  • 01Learn your machine's healthy voice while it's new. Push it somewhere quiet and listen. Lift each wheel and spin it by hand — smooth and near-silent is the sound you're memorizing. Every diagnosis you ever make is a comparison to this.
  • 02Add the spin test to your regular checkup. Ten seconds per wheel. Bearings announce themselves months before they fail — but only to someone who spins the wheel.
  • 03When a noise shows up, write it down with the odometer reading. "Click at 412 miles, found screw in tread" — one line, dated. Noises that get written down get fixed; noises that don't get louder.

That third habit is quietly building something: your scooter's record. A machine whose sounds, fixes, and mileage are written down knows its own history — you diagnose faster ("the click came back — same wheel as last time"), you never re-buy a part you already replaced, and whoever owns the machine after you inherits proof instead of promises. Beeps and chirps from the display are a different species: that's the scooter talking in code, not wearing down. On the S60

The S60 has no chain and no belt — two hub motors and very few moving parts, which keeps its healthy voice short: tire hum, motor hum, and nothing else. That's an advantage for your ears: fewer sounds to memorize, so a new one stands out fast. Why do my scooter brakes squeal?
